Which airlines can you book with Avios?

BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUY

You're not restricted to just the above airlines when it comes to redeeming Avios. There's an impressive range of airlines to choose from, depending on which of the programs you use.

Since you can transfer Avios between the programs listed above, you have maximum flexibility for Avios redemptions.

However, the airline redemption list isn't the same for each program.

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINTS GUY

British Airways is a founding member of the global Oneworld alliance. Oneworld is one of the "Big Three" alliances, with the other two being Star Alliance and SkyTeam.

Assuming award availability, you can use your Avios from your British Airways, Qatar Airways, Finnair or Iberia accounts for flights on Oneworld airlines. Currently, the Oneworld alliance includes the following airline partners:

The best ways to redeem Avios

ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY

With so many ways to redeem Avios across the various airlines and programs, here are some of our favorite options:

  • British Airways Club charges just 4,750 Avios each way for off-peak flights from London to European destinations up to 650 miles away (peak-date flights only require 5,250 Avios). This includes destinations in Ireland, the U.K., Denmark, France, Germany, Austria and Italy.
  • Finnair Plus charges just 11,000 Avios for flights within the continental U.S. and Canada operated by Alaska Airlines, regardless of the length of the flight. This includes coast-to-coast services, even if you require a connection, which is an excellent deal. If you wish to fly American Airlines, you'll be charged a higher 16,500 Avios rate one-way, so try and find an itinerary operated only by Alaska.
  • Iberia Club can unlock one of the cheapest ways to fly to Europe in business class. Flights across the Atlantic under 4,000 miles in length cost just 40,500 Iberia Avios plus minimal fees and taxes on off-peak dates. This includes flights from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., to airports in Spain.
  • British Airways Club offers the ability to fly from major West Coast cities to the Hawaiian Islands for just 13,000 British Airways Avios each way, thanks to the distance-based Avios chart. This beats the award rate for all the U.S. airlines.

How to earn Avios

LIAM SPENCER/THE POINTS GUY

You can transfer your credit card points or miles to Avios-based programs and combine them using the above method. Here are your transfer options:

These transfers are at a 1:1 rate — except for Marriott Bonvoy, which you can transfer points from at a 3:1 rate. With Marriott Bonvoy, you'll also get a 5,000-Avios bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer (so 60,000 points becomes 25,000 Avios, for example).

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could convert to Avios:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees): Earn 100,000 bonus points and a $500 Chase Travel℠ promo credit after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees): Earn 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express: Find out your offer and see if you are eligible to earn as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $8,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.
  • American Express® Gold Card: Find out your offer and see if you are eligible to earn as high as 100,000 Membership Rewards Points after spending $6,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Bottom line

As more airlines use Avios as their rewards currency, travelers have additional flexibility and a broader choice of redemption options and possibilities across dozens of airlines.

Now that you know exactly where to spend those Avios, you can begin booking travel or transferring them if or when needed.
